The character here is Sai Ci, the symbol of beauty in Chinese culture. She sacrificed herself marrying the king of enemy country and ultimately destroyed that nation. The reward of helping her native country to be reborn was an order from the queen that she must die to prevent the same fate happened to her own country.
This scene express the feeling of shock and injustice, with a simple, yet powerful background of frightened birds. It also put emphasis on the beauty of Sai Ci by the way her body was draws so stylisticly. It is a master piece in technique of illustrating.
