Illustration Class Room

hosted by Tang Ho (co-hosted by lovable little Lisa)

This class room is mainly for people who already have basic skills of drawing. I will not teach any technique. I believe every one have their own style. I will concentrate on composition, balance, emphasis and grammar of a drawing, In short, how well the pictures are telling a story.

Lesson Ten: Color theory --Basic

Hello! Lisa Hawken is here! Finally, I get to be the host, not just an assistance.

Do you know color is the most important element of Tang's illustrations? Behind me is the CMYK colors: Cyan, Magenta,Yellow and Black. They are the four primary colors that create all possible colors in applied arts or printed materials. ,

(The other mode:RGB=Red, Green and Blue is the three primary light that make up all the color on your monitor. It is outside of our class subject)

Color can express feeling, temperature, symbol and mood.

Important: Using them correctly can enchant your drawing; using the wrong colors would destroy your work! So be careful

Now let us take a look of what color can do.

Emotions

Happiness, Delighted.

Yellow is a bright color, therefore it is associated with light, warmth etc. Happiness is also associated with those elements, thus making yellow a color of happiness.

However, Yellow is also used as a warning color for its brightness.

Anger

The color of blood is red thus symbolizing Violence. When people get angry, they are really seeing red.

A person locked inside a room painted totally red, will become insane faster than in a green room. Green is easier on the eyes.

Sadness

Blue has a longer wavelength, so it's easier on the eyes. When people feel sad, they don't think about the exciting colors like red and yellow.

Fear, Danger

Red has a shorter wavelength, making it noticeable from a longer distance, and it has been used as a symbol for danger.

Danger bring fear, and so on. The line between anger and fear is thin.

Temperature

 Cold

Color close to the blue end of the spectrum indicate cold temperature.

Hot

Colors near the red end of the spectrum indicate high temperature. I could have used red in this sample, but yellow is hotter that blue anyway.

Symbol

 Death

Soil color is neutral. It is neither cold nor hot.

When you think about soil, graves and burials come to your mind.

 Delicate, tenderness

Pink appears in a wide variety of flowers. It is a less saturated version of red, and since red is a color of excitement, pink retains some of that characteristic. It attracts interest but is not so powerful as to evoke our emotion.

Color theory is a very difficult subject, and I can only show you the basic. If I try to tell you everything about color theory, it will takes at least ten more lessons to finish.

That was the final section of Tang's Class Room. Hope you enjoyed the classes. If you have any question, Just Send Email
